Windows Easy Transfer Companion enables you to automatically transfer your most important programs from your Windows XP-based PC to your new Windows Vista-based PC. The software will move more than 100 of the most popular programs, as well as many others that you may have installed.
You have complete control over selecting which programs to transfer, so only the programs you care about will move. The software will alert you if some programs may not be able to transfer, or may not transfer with high confidence. Most security software is not able to transfer due to technical reasons.
Easy Transfer Companion is designed to be used in addition to Windows Easy Transfer - which is part of Windows Vista and automatically transfers your data and settings.
Nice thing if you are looking for a way to transfer existing applications without need to do all of the installing yourself :)

I attempted both Windows East Transfer and Windows Easy
Transfer Companion (WET and WETC). Results were negative.
WET worked for 8 hours on a 80GB disk drive and a 54Mbs
wireless network and hung. I restarted it and achieved
the same results. When I looked on the VISTA target machine
some of the files were transfered.
On to WETC. It worked for another 8 hours but completed.
However, of 100 or so programs I have on the old machine
about 10% of them transfered and half of those did not
work on VISTA. Apache, Microsoft Platform SDK, MSDN,
Google Earth, MS Visual Studio .NET, MS Office (required
Activation and a CD/DVD) all failed.
PaintShop Pro did not work from the start menu, but did
work from the desktop icon???? It caused VISTA to abandon
AERO for Windows VISTA Basic.
SUMMARY:
8 hours is probably about the amount of time needed to simply
copy all my data (80GB @ 5MB/sec = 4.4 hours) and reinstall
my programs. I cannot fathom what WET does for 8 hours or a
4 hour disk drive.

Hmm, interesting to know ... I opted out for a nice manual backup too - but even if WET does work, I think 8 hours is just ridiculous!
Anyone else had similar experience?
