I do not know if this is an isolated incident, i.e. if it is happening only to me or if it is happening to other people as well but here is the deal:
When I run any application which uses my sound card (say MediaPlayer or ZENcast Organizer for my podcasts), which ever device is currently playing the sound (either being integrated laptop speakers, or the headphones), that device outputs the music (as expected).
Now, if I plug in the headphones - my music from that application is still being directed to the first device (in this case speakers). I can't do anything in order to "move" the sound from going from speakers to the headphones. Only closing the application and then running it will play the sound on the device it should.
Now, I did notice there are options for Sound Playback. Right click on the sound icon in the taskbar and then choosing "Playback Devices" brings up a control where I can configure my output devices.

More into the "Properties" of a device, reveal there is an interesting thing.

As you can see, there is a way to allow application to take exclusive control of any sound device. I searched through help but did not find anything which explains in a little more detail what's going on here.
I tried every possible combination starting from setting none on both speakers and headphone properties, to having one on each, to all on (default). None if it really did any good in the end.
The main point here is: If I am listening to something and plug in my headphones - the sound should transfer from the internal laptop speakers to my headphones.
If I disconnect the headphones - the sound should continue to play on my speakers.
This is not what I am experiencing ... This really becomes a big pain in the ars, especially when I am watching an hour long webcast in the explorer window and decide to put may headphones half through - I have to actually restart the whole browser!
Thing to note is that this may be happening:
- Only to me
- Only on High Definition Sound Cards
- To everyone else - but they just didn't figure it out ...
Any of you having the same issue?
Update:
It seems that this sound issue has been fixed after installing the SigmaTel drivers provided by Sony... I guess it wasn't Microsoft's fault after all! Cool!
