First Vista Bug

Digg!

Not that it is something huge - just interesting. Namely, couple of times I tried to copy some of my files file to another folder (especially if these were executable), this puzzling error Error 0x800704C8: "The requested operation cannot be performed on a file with a user-mapped- section open" jumped up...

After searching Google about this it seems there is no real answer about it... I did notice a trend within the forum posts of people referring to folder permissions?

Nice thing about it is that if you give it another shot by clicking "Try Again" it all works fine ...

I noticed that someone asked about this on Windows Shell Blog, but still there is no reply ... It can be found here for further reference: http://shellrevealed.com/forums/post/5228.aspx

Bug #2 in Vista, this time Sound... (?)

Digg!

I do not know if this is an isolated incident, i.e. if it is happening only to me or if it is happening to other people as well but here is the deal:

When I run any application which uses my sound card (say MediaPlayer or ZENcast Organizer for my podcasts), which ever device is currently playing the sound (either being integrated laptop speakers, or the headphones), that device outputs the music (as expected).

Now, if I plug in the headphones - my music from that application is still being directed to the first device (in this case speakers). I can't do anything in order to "move" the sound from going from speakers to the headphones. Only closing the application and then running it will play the sound on the device it should.

Now, I did notice there are options for Sound Playback. Right click on the sound icon in the taskbar and then choosing "Playback Devices" brings up a control where I can configure my output devices.

More into the "Properties" of a device, reveal there is an interesting thing.

As you can see, there is a way to allow application to take exclusive control of any sound device. I searched through help but did not find anything which explains in a little more detail what's going on here.

I tried every possible combination starting from setting none on both speakers and headphone properties, to having one on each, to all on (default). None if it really did any good in the end.

The main point here is: If I am listening to something and plug in my headphones - the sound should transfer from the internal laptop speakers to my headphones.
If I disconnect the headphones - the sound should continue to play on my speakers.

This is not what I am experiencing ... This really becomes a big pain in the ars, especially when I am watching an hour long webcast in the explorer window and decide to put may headphones half through - I have to actually restart the whole browser!

Thing to note is that this may be happening:

  1. Only to me
  2. Only on High Definition Sound Cards
  3. To everyone else - but they just didn't figure it out ...

Any of you having the same issue?

Update:
It seems that this sound issue has been fixed after installing the SigmaTel drivers provided by Sony... I guess it wasn't Microsoft's fault after all! Cool!

Vista's Online Distribution Gotchas

Digg!

Joe Wilcox wrote on Microsoft-Watch.com yesterday about something quite important for those of you who are planning to upgrade from XP to Vista 64bit.

According to him, Microsoft has acknowledged that there is in fact a problem: "The 64-bit Windows Vista install is actually a 64-bit install executable. Therefore, you must be running a 64-bit operating system."

So, if you are running a 32bit XP system - maybe the only way for you to install 64bit version of Vista from an upgrade DVD is to follow that Workaround I talked about some days ago, especially installing Vista twice - first as a 30 day trial, and then again as an upgrade using your real product key. To refresh your memory - check this article.

So, there yo have it ...

On the other note, I am working on an article which I will publish some time soon about a first real-life experience of running vista after a month. Pros, cons, etc. I do have couple of things I really do not like which make those posts about unfinished product true - but on the other hand you'll see that Microsoft balances out these cons with some nice new things I really like.
